If you are involved in an accident and the other driver is at fault, typically your injuries are covered by the other drivers insurance. If the other driver does not have enough coverage to pay for your injuries, underinsured insurance is extra protection for you. This coverage is only in place when the other driver is at fault and pays the difference between your costs and the policy limits of the underinsured driver (up to your policy limits). In addition to the out of pocket cost of your injuries, underinsured motorist coverage will compensate you for your pain and suffering also.
Underinsured motorist insurance is not required by any state. You must check in your state to find out what type of underinsured motorist insurance is offered. Most states underinsured motorist insurance applies to bodily injuries only. In other states, underinsured motorist property damage coverage is available. |
